Plant-Based All-Stars: Why You Need Rich Roll In Your Life

I am excited to launch a new series of posts called “Plant-Based All-Stars.” In this series, I will share with you some of the incredible leaders in this movement, and I can’t think of a better person to start with than Mr. Rich Roll.

Rich’s story is nothing short of amazing. After years of eating a Standard American Diet and battling with alcoholism, Rich found himself 50 pounds overweight on the eve of his 40th birthday. As he struggled to get up a flight of stairs at his home, Rich had a moment of clarity. This wasn’t where he wanted to be. This wasn’t where he was supposed to be. He found himself on a path toward an early heart attack. Years earlier he had been a successful competitive swimmer at Stanford University. And yet he now found himself struggling to accomplish the simplest of physical tasks.

How many of us can relate to that feeling? This isn’t where I am supposed to be.

Rich took that realization and ran with it — literally. He took the hardest look at his life and changed everything wholesale, adopting a 100% plant-based diet the very next day, and getting in shape.

But not just any kind of shape. World-class shape. Down 50 pounds in just 2 years, Rich was named one of Men’s Health’s 25 Fittest Men in America in 2009. In two years. At age 42. Wow.

Rich found the world of ultra endurance events, and thrived. Perhaps most impressive (amongst an incredibly impressive list), Rich completed “The Epic 5” — five full length Ironman races on 5 Hawaiian Islands in 5 days. Yes.

Rich proves it can be done, no matter where you are. You are never stuck.

Rich’s incredible story is told in his memoir called “Finding Ultra: Rejecting Middle Age, Becoming One Of The World’s Fittest Men, And Discovering Myself

Fast forward a few years and Rich is one of the leading voices in the world of health and wellness; not just plant-based nutrition, but fitness, meditation, spirituality, and self-growth.

The Rich Roll Podcast

My personal experience with Rich’s work centers on his incredible podcast, aptly called the “Rich Roll Podcast.”

Rich sits down with the leading minds in health and wellness, spiritual growth and personal development, art, entertainment, and entrepreneurship for some epic long-form conversation. Diving into this world is like having a great chat with a close friend — a friend that is also a thought leader in the conscious movement toward a more sustainable and compassionate future.

If you are looking for an entry point, my three favorite guests are: Casey Neistat (episode 73), Preston Smiles (episodes 103 & 134), and Evan Rock (episode 98). Once you are hooked explore his whole catalog. You won’t be disappointed!
